In today’s post, we’re going to go over some of the problems that Web Designers have when it comes to working on a project. Although it may appear that these issues can be easily avoided, you ma y be surprised just how often they come up between a client and a designer, so by understanding them a bit better, you may find yourself better equipped to streamline your project and get exactly what you want in a timely fashion.


Now, are you after a static website? The kind that doesn’t need regular updating and may be just for information purposes. Or maybe you want to post up images from projects or write blog posts for your readership? Then a WordPress, or similar CMS-based website is what you’ll need. How about a full e-commerce solution because you have products you want to sell? It’s always a good idea to start off a project with the kind of website you’re after firmly fixed in place. It’ll help your web designer get a good grip of what you want and will allow them to accurately give you a price and an idea of how long it will take to create. Which leads us into…


Having a budget in mind for you project is a good idea, as is having a reasonable timescale. A lot of clients can be surprised at how much a website can cost as all they see and think of is the end product and may not know how long it takes to reach that stage. A good web designer will usually ask what your project budget will be, so be prepared to answer that question. The timescale can also be surprising as it’s possible the client may not know how long the web designer will take to design, build and implement a website. This can vary, due to the complexity of the project, but try to be realistic; an online shop designed from the ground up, built, tested and deployed will more than likely take more than a day or two. Conversely, a bakery’s static website showing their menu, a gallery and their contact details won’t take months to create.


This could tie in with thinking about the kind of website you want, but web designer might have different ideas as to what areas or features are important to you and the website you want built. Time, and therefore money, can be saved if these features are communicated clearly well in advance, lest you run the risk of having to redesign huge portions of the website because the feature you wanted to stand out has been pushed to the back.


Content is king on a website and getting it all together is quite often the part of website creation that takes the longest and is also where a lot of projects stall. Communicating with your web designer about the type of content you want in certain areas on the website is just the first hurdle; it’s a good idea to actually have that content ready to send over. This is usually just text and images, but can extend to audio files, downloadable files such as pdfs, etc. If you’re building an online shop it’s also a good idea to send through a few products to the web designer to make sure they look the way you want them, before the web designer hands the website over to you.


This one may be a bit controversial; surely you of all people know exactly the kind of website you want, and how it should look? You’re no stranger to the internet, you probably even have a few websites you’ve visited in the past written down as inspiration as to how you’d like your website to look. But remember that you’re not only hiring a web designer to design and build a website for you – you’re also hiring their expertise. A good web designer keeps on top of the modern trends and technologies in web design and it’s these hours of study and research that you’re paying for. Here’s an example: Comic Sans as a font might have been an intriguing novelty a couple of decades ago, but it’s severely outdated these days and your web designer will know exactly the right kinds of font to use for your website. Obviously at the end of the day the website will be built to the specifications that you lay out. You are the client at the end of the day. But take on board suggestions made by your web designer as all they want is to give you the best website they can make for you as it’ll also reflect well upon them when your visitors see it. Listening to your web designer can give you the website you can all be proud of.
