St Austell Boxing Club
St Austell Boxing Club is an amateur boxing club located in the village of St Stephen, Cornwall. Established in 2008 by Head Coach Jimmy Waugh, the club has its heart in the local community, training people to box and teaching them valuable skills such as self-confidence along the way. The club's motto is "Trust, Courage, Pride, Honour, Loyalty, Strength and Passion" and this is conveyed in everything the club does.
Jimmy and his team of coaches help anyone, from any walk of life, understand the benefits of exercise and camaraderie for both physical and mental health. Members even have the opportunity to become carded boxers to compete in local and national tournaments, fully supported by the sport's governing body England Boxing.

Project Background
St Austell Boxing Club is a massive presence in SiteJacket's own location of St Stephen, near St Austell, Cornwall, and after meeting with Jimmy, we identified that the club had a very specific problem; they barely had any consistent online presence.
During our initial consultation, we learned that the club had been let down before by freelance web designers who had left them in the lurch when it came to organising a website for them. Upon hearing this, and wanting to help out such a cornerstone of the local community we immediately leapt into action.
Jimmy's vision for the website was one that informed people who may be interested in joining the club to see what kinds of classes they offered, along with the benefits of amateur boxing.
The Challenge
Being let down in the past, St Austell Boxing Club was tentative about trusting web designers, so we knew we had to deliver an amazing website for them.
The main points of the brief were:
- It was to have a modern look, with fast loading speeds and responsive in nature, making sure it looked fantastic on all devices
- It had to be as informative to the visitor as possible, with articles about the benefits of amateur boxing along with session times and coach bios
- The club sold training kit which was to be displayed on the website for people to enquire about.
- Local SEO was a factor in order to reach as many people as they could in the community
What We Delivered
From our initial conversation it was clear to us what Jimmy and the club wanted from the website. Understanding this, we designed a six-page website that covered many different aspects of the club.
Building the website on WordPress and utilising the BeTheme framework, this allowed us to develop the website with Jimmy and the rest of the coaches able to see the build in real-time and comment on the progress when appropriate.
We created for St Austell Boxing Club a six-page website which featured the following:
- An informative homepage including an eye-catching video header along with CTAs to encourage visitors to contact the club
- High-quality, professional photos taken at the club for use throughout the website
- A blog page so Jimmy and the team could update the website with their own news and articles
- St Austell Boxing Club's logo, branding and colour scheme used extensively throughout to maintain consistency
- Optimisation for Local SEO, utilising keyword research for other amateur boxing clubs
In addition to the website, the club chose to take out a Website Care Plan to ensure that the website stayed up-to-date and secure, but also allowing for monthly content updates and general peace of mind.
The Result
Upon launch, the reception from the club and the community was immediately positive.
- The website began ranking for organic keywords it hadn't before
- Submissions to local directories were made, allowing local people to find the club
- Organic traffic increased and continues to grow regularly
Jimmy, the coaches and members of St Austell Boxing Club were overjoyed with the new website. It showcases the club as a friendly, welcoming place with a courteous, professional team that would take care of anyone who wanted to learn to box.
Since the launch, Jimmy has noticed more people talking about the website as their point of entry resulting in more memberships.

Reflecting on the Project
This project was truly one that was close to our heart at SiteJacket. When we relocated to Cornwall, our local boxing club put on an exhibition which had a real feel for local community about it which encouraged us to meet with Jimmy at St Austell Boxing Club.
Hearing about how the club had been let down in the past wanted us to take action for something so important in our new home, so we treated this project as delicately and professionally as we could. Working with Jimmy and the team was a real treat and it's always exciting to hear about what the club has coming up and how well they are doing.
